The Story of an Egg and a window

info@pembridgechurch.org.uk

This year a large Easter Egg would have cost you anywhere from £4 upwards, so called “luxury” eggs much more. Unfortunately they tend not to last long, they can be demolished in minutes. Still, as the saying goes: Put “eating chocolate” on your list of things to do today, and at least one thing on that list will get done!

For your investment of several pounds your return is a short lived, albeit pleasant sugar high. Soon, you, your friends and the community around you, will forget that egg ever existed, if they even knew in the first place.

Some things last longer than Easter Eggs. One such thing is the East Window in St Mary’s Church. This window has stood in the church for over 130 years. Reference to the window can be found in the 1901 Translations of the Woolhope Club, contained in an article by Reverend F Whitehead, Rector of Pembridge:- “The East Window was put in, I fancy, when the chancel was restored by members of Mr Crouch’s family.” The chancel restoration took place in 1871 and was paid for by Reverend J Crouch. Even though we have no information as to who made or installed the window, it would appear to have been there since this date.

The window itself is however now in an unsafe condition. Panes are at risk of falling out, leadwork has deteriorated and even the window guards are becoming detached. It is in desperate need of repair. Because the Church is a listed building, it can only be repaired by recognised craftsmen, specialised in ancient stained glass windows.

The cost of this repair to restore the window to its full glory is £16,243. The PCC of Pembridge church has worked tirelessly to secure grants and funding of £8,200 towards the cost, which leaves a shortfall of £8,543. Please will you support our appeal for the remainder of the funds we need?

We are asking people in the parish of Pembridge to donate the cost of a “luxury” Easter Egg to help ensure that the repaired window lasts another hundred years. Think about it! You can help ensure an enduring legacy for members of our community and future generations.

If you wish you can be acknowledged and remembered for this. We intend to open a “window book” to record in perpetuity all those who make a donation towards the window appeal, and for this book to be on permanent display in the Church. The money you give will last for hundreds of years. Can you remember what Easter eggs you bought two years ago, or even how many you ate? Which is the better investment?

Preserving the fabric of our ancient buildings is important, not least because Pembridge Church and its separate bell tower attract many tourists and visitors to our village, who in turn support many local businesses. However, more importantly, the church itself is the centre of our community in many ways, and has been for hundreds of years. The church has probably been or will be a help and support to most people in our parish, even those who do not go to church on a regular basis.

Please can you help preserve part of your local heritage?
